The Israel Institute of Archeology writes an article about Canaanite Arad and the beginning of the settlement.
The Canaanite Arad is identified in Tel Arad which is located about eight kilometers west of the city of Arad which is named after him. The site is on the northern edge of the Arad Valley, at the foot of Mount Hebron. The area was a crossroad for longitudinal axes that moved from Mount Hebron to the south and for roads that moved along the Be’er Sheva and Arad valleys towards the Dead Sea.
